I've been on EMR for 61/2 yrs. The biggest error in my professional career. And I've been screaming this from the rooftops and it now appears others have heard or had the same experience. Too bad it's too late. LS

Building systems for specialists and subspecialists takes skills far beyond the capabilities of the most of HIT vendors. Those vendors also have little clue about the talents needed for success in subspecialty clinical IT.

My own experience with a CCHIT certified EHR system was abysmal. We were never able to successfully implement. During the first implementation phase we reduced our patient volume by 50%. The second attempt we reduced by 30-40% and still could not see patients efficiently and properly. Glitch after glitch after glitch with no help in sight.
Perhaps I am a bit too cynical. One way to limit overall spending is to slow specialists down. Widespread implementation would certainly do this. Could this be the grand design.
I am not technologically averse. I finally got an I-phone. I am upset that I did not get it sooner. It saves me time and energy and is very functional. The immediate access to Epocrates, Web MD and other medical websites is fantastic.
EHR's aren't there yet... not even close
